- Amazon Week 35 - 2023
With sweat beading, lungs retching, and the pressure of London traffic building on my tale, I was having serious doubt over my decision to cycle to Paris on my Grandad’s ~60 year old race bike. All before the start line.
There are typical things you look for in a good bicycle. Light carbon frame - this was steal and heavy af. Smooth fast gears - these were manual and took 4 seconds. Clip in pedals/shoes for extra power - I had Sketchers on.
Mostly though, you want to feel comfortable. Familiar. Due to many unfortunate events I’d never been on this bike for more than 5km. And hadn’t actually sat on it for over 6 years.
Yet here we were. Lining up on a start line at 6am with the intention to traverse the English and French countryside and reach the Arc du Triomphe. A position my Dad was in ~15 years earlier. On the same bicycle. With equal reservations.
The Royal British Legion exists to help members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, veterans and their families. They’ve done this for 27 years. And quirky stories like the above represent a fraction of the many experiences surrounding the charity.
That being said, I figured I’d have a final punt raising some extra coins. Whilst also gifting something in return too.
